About the Commission:
The CAC is a joint committee of the City of Port Townsend and Jefferson County created in January 2008 as an advisory group to address the problems and opportunities posed by global warming/climate change. A joint City-County resolution has set a goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80% below 1990 levels by the year 2050. The CAC successfully completed an inventory of greenhouse gases and drafted a Climate Action Plan. On September 22, 2011, the City and County jointly adopted the Climate Action Plan (CAP). The plan outlines strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions which include:
- Specific measures to reduce emissions from City and County government operations (Chapter V.A) – A resource conservation manager (RCM) has been retained to assist in the implementation of these measures.
- Community outreach and engagement - This is the focus of the CAC; Chapter V. B includes several measures that the community should consider and emphasizes partnerships.
- Outlines land use and transportation policies that the City and County should be referred to their respective City and County planning commissions for further consideration. The CAC is charged with launching a community engagement campaign which builds on existing efforts, fosters partnerships and develops new initiatives. The campaign shall be designed to
- Inspire individual action leading to substantial community-wide reductions in energy use and greenhouse gas emissions
- Raise public awareness
- Engage community members
- Promote successes
- Deliver calls for action
- Inspire behavioral change
