Police Reserve Program
The Port Townsend Police Department Reserve Officer program is designed to train civilians to become police officers serving the City of Port Townsend. Reserve Officers work on a part-time basis, alongside time full-time officers and civilian staff, to augment the Police Department’s mission of ensuring Port Townsend remains “a safe place to live, work, learn, play, and visit.”
As a Reserve Officer, you will assist with patrol throughout the city, including responding to 911 calls and engaging in proactive crime prevention and criminal investigations; you will help at parades, events, and festivals; you will work hand in hand with the staff of City of Port Townsend, the Jefferson County Prosecutors Office, and other community organizations; and you will learn the skills necessary to assist in emergency response, de-escalation, crime prevention and investigation, and first aid. You may also be able to assist with specialty assignments as they become available, including opportunities to assist with training programs, bike and marine patrols, and community outreach teams.
As of December 2022, we are currently in the process of updating our Reserve Program. An application process will become available soon. In the meantime, we are interested in establishing a list of people interested in being future applicants. At a minimum, we anticipate the following requirements for consideration:
- You must be at least 21 years of age
- You must possess a valid Washington State Drivers License
- You must be a high school graduate
- You must not have any felony or domestic violence convictions
If you are interested in putting your name forward, or have any questions, please contact the Reserve Coordinator, Officer Trevor Hansen, at thansen@cityofpt.us
This is an excellent opportunity for anyone who is civic-minded and wants to help their community, and can also be a great experience for those considering or pursuing law enforcement as a full time career.
